The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) has issued a new tariff notification, officially increasing gas prices for domestic consumers, effective from July 1. This move comes as another blow to inflation-hit households across Pakistan.
According to the notification, gas tariffs for domestic users have been revised significantly:
Protected Domestic Consumers will now be charged between Rs. 200 to Rs. 350 per MMBTU, with an additional fixed monthly charge of Rs. 600.
Non-Protected Domestic Consumers will face rates ranging from Rs. 500 to Rs. 4,200 per MMBTU, alongside fixed charges of Rs. 1,500 per month. Those consuming more than 1.5 MMBTU will be charged Rs. 3,000 monthly as fixed charges.
For public and institutional sectors, including government offices, hospitals, and educational institutions, the gas rate has been set at Rs. 3,175 per MMBTU.
Commercial and industrial gas tariffs have also been revised as follows:
Tandoors (bread ovens): Rs. 110 to Rs. 700 per MMBTU
Commercial users: Rs. 3,900 per MMBTU
General industry: Rs. 2,300 per MMBTU
Captive power plants: Rs. 3,500 per MMBTU
CNG sector: Rs. 3,750 per MMBTU
Cement factories: Rs. 4,400 per MMBTU
Fertilizer plants: Rs. 1,597 per MMBTU
Power generation companies (including K-Electric): Rs. 1,225 per MMBTU
The revised rates reflect the government's broader fiscal and energy sector reform efforts but are expected to increase the cost burden on consumers and businesses alike.
