Lahore: The Chairman of the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA), Masroor Khan, has indicated the possibility of an upcoming surge in gas tariffs across the country.
Addressing a public hearing in Lahore, Khan noted that global gas prices were on the rise, and Pakistan might experience an increase in gas prices as well. Various stakeholders voiced their concerns during the hearing.
Khan revealed that Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited has formally proposed a 131% hike in gas tariffs, following a previous increase that came into effect on November 1. Taking into account the input from stakeholders, Khan announced that the next hearing would occur in Peshawar, with subsequent recommendations to be forwarded to the government for consideration.
While emphasizing that the government ultimately decides on gas price changes, Khan underscored OGRA's commitment to prioritizing consumer interests. He acknowledged the disparity in gas pressure between affluent and impoverished areas, urging consumers to adopt gas-saving practices.
Khan shared his personal efforts in managing household gas bills through conservation measures. Addressing the challenges faced by OGRA, he highlighted the low and depleting gas reserves in the country, necessitating the import of expensive gas, particularly Re-Gasified Liquefied Natural Gas (RLNG), which imposes an additional burden on consumers.
