Pakistan Railways to spend over Rs31bn on track safety

Pakistan Railways (PR) is investing more than Rs31 billion in six major development projects aimed at upgrading and rehabilitating the country’s railway network, according to official documents.
The projects, being executed under the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP), are designed to improve track safety, enhance operational efficiency and provide faster and more reliable services for passengers and freight operators.
Among the key initiatives are track safety works on the Rohri–Khanpur and Tando Adam–Rohri sections in Sukkur Division, with estimated costs of Rs4.87 billion and Rs4.83 billion, respectively. Safety upgrades on the Keamari–Hyderabad section in Karachi Division are estimated at Rs5.4 billion.
Additional projects include essential track safety works on the Khanewal–Shahdara route via Shorkot, Faisalabad and Qila Sheikhupura at a cost of Rs6.3 billion, the Sher Shah–Kundian section in Multan Division costing Rs4.9 billion, and the Rohri–Sibi section estimated at Rs5.49 billion.
According to the document, the projects are expected to significantly reduce travel times, saving up to 106 minutes on some routes upon completion, while improving overall safety and reliability across the rail network.
