Pakistan posted a current account surplus of $2.1 billion for the fiscal year 2024–25, marking the country’s first annual surplus in 14 years, according to data released by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP).

The central bank also reported a monthly surplus of $330 million in June 2025, a significant turnaround from the $500 million deficit recorded in June 2024.

Overall, this represents a sharp improvement from the $2 billion deficit posted during the previous fiscal year.

Economists have attributed this recovery primarily to record-high remittances and improved export performance.

Despite the positive current account figures, Pakistan's total foreign exchange reserves declined by $71.6 million, bringing the total to $19.95 billion, according to the SBP’s latest weekly update.

The decline was largely driven by a $1.55 billion drop in commercial banks’ dollar deposits, which now stand at $5.43 billion. Meanwhile, the SBP’s own reserves saw a modest increase of $23.4 million, reaching $14.52 billion.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday welcomed the development, calling the $2.1 billion current account surplus the highest in the last 22 years.

“Due to government measures, foreign exchange reserves have crossed $19 billion,” he said in a statement.

The premier credited the improvement to the surge in remittances and exports, adding that the country’s financial indicators were consistently showing signs of economic stabilization.

“The government is taking priority steps to further improve the business and investor-friendly environment,” he remarked, while also praising the efforts of the economic team.
