Pakistan’s debt volume hits record Rs73,000 billion

The volume of debt borrowed by the government of Pakistan has reached a record Rs73,000 billion.

According to the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), the government borrowed debt amounting to Rs8,230 billion during a one-year period, from February 2024 to February 2025.

The country’s debt increased by 12.7 per cent in one year and 1.3 per cent in one month. 

The bank has informed the government’s domestic debt went up by Rs8351 billion in one year, between February 2024 and February 2025, thus registering an increase by 19.6 per cent, while the domestic debt went up by Rs788 billion, thus registering an increase by 1.5 per cent in one month.

A slight drop was, however, witnessed in the foreign debt, which came down by 0.5 per cent in one year. 

The debt came down by Rs120 billion; from Rs22,134 billion in February 2024 to Rs22,14 billion in February 2025. 

However, the foreign debt increased by Rs134 billion in one month; up by 0.6 per cent.   

It jumped from Rs21,880 billion to Rs22,14 billion.
