Pakistan's petroleum dealers have strongly opposed the government's deregulation policy, warning that they may shut down petrol pumps nationwide.

Abdul Sami Khan, Chairman of the All Pakistan Petroleum Dealers Association, expressed concerns in a video message, stating that deregulating fuel prices could lead to smuggling and the adulteration of petroleum products.

Khan explained that the proposed deregulation would allow petrol stations to set their own prices, potentially leading to inconsistencies and unfair pricing across the country.

In response to the policy, an emergency meeting of the central committee has been scheduled, and protest banners are expected to be displayed across the nation.

The association also plans to send an urgent letter to the Petroleum Ministry to formally protest the deregulation policy and demand an increase in the margin.

The association is requesting a 13-rupee per litre margin, up from the current 4 percent.

While the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) has expressed support for the dealers' concerns, it has refrained from making a public statement.

Khan also raised the issue of increasing petroleum smuggling from Iran, calling on the federal government to negotiate a legal agreement with Iran to address the illegal trade.
