Pakistan Peoples Party leader Sharmila Farooqi weighed in on Danish Taimoor's recent statement about multiple marriages in Islam, criticising it as an arrogant display of dominance in a marital relationship that should be based on mutual respect and partnership.

Taking to Instagram, Sharmila pointed out that Danish’s remarks suggested he was “doing a favor” to his wife, Ayeza Khan, by choosing not to marry again, despite Islam allowing men to have up to four wives.

“It’s a blatant reflection of how men manipulate religion to serve their own dominance,” she remarked.

She went on to clarify that Islam does not permit multiple marriages as a privilege for men to enjoy at will, but rather as an exception under strict conditions of justice conditions that, she noted, most men fail to meet.

“His statement reduces marriage to a power play, where a man’s so-called ‘restraint’ is framed as an act of generosity rather than a basic expectation of loyalty and respect,” she asserted.

Sharmila also reflected on Ayeza Khan’s silent reaction during the conversation, stating that whether her quiet smile 'was out of grace or societal conditioning,' it was indicative of how women are expected to suppress their emotions, even in situations where their self-respect is disregarded by their own husbands.

“This is the real problem: men believing that women owe them gratitude for not being discarded or replaced,” she lamented.

Concluding her statement, Sharmila emphasised that loyalty and honesty in a marriage are not favors that men bestow upon women but rather fundamental principles of a respectful and equal partnership.

“Women don’t need favors; they need respect, agency, and the recognition that marriage is a partnership—not a man’s charity,” she stated.
