Fawad Khan's appearance in upcoming movie 'Abir Gulaal' stirs controversy in India

Indian upcoming film “Abir Gulaal”, featuring renowned Pakistani actor Fawad Khan and Vaani Kapoor, sparked controversy shortly after its first teaser released on Tuesday.
India Today reported that the film drew the attention of Indian political parties and other film bodies, raising questions about its future on the silver screen.
Directors' Association president Ashoke Pandit stated that the he was told that the project was not backed by any Indian studio but number of producer associations were not in favour to film Pakistani artists in Indian movies.
Notably, the film was being opposed by Indian politicians and film makers despite Pakistani artist were allowed work in Indian according to Bombay High Court ruling in 2023 that had dismissed a petition seeking a complete ban on artists from Pakistan to perform or work in India.

"This happened after the Pulwama attack when the federation took a strong stand. We do not encourage artists from Pakistan to work here. We would appeal to the authorities to look into the matter,” India Today quoted Pandit.
Similarly, Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) also opposed the film, with spokesperson stated that they are against the film’ release in Maharashtra.
“We just learned about the film [Abir Gulaal]; however, we are stating clearly that we would not allowed to release this film in Maharashtra, because it features Pakistani actor,” Hindustan Times quoted MNS spokesperson Ameya Khopkar.
The spokesperson further said: “We are gathering more information related to this film and then would share our full statement soon.”
Similarly, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Nirupam not only saw aggressive towards film but also criticized Pakistani artists, stating: “The films of Pakistani artists do not become very popular among the Indian audience. That is why Pakistani stars have never been able to succeed in India.”

“I would advise Pakistanis that instead of exploring the Indian market, it is better to work in their own country,” he said.
Nirupam sought government’s intervention to bar Pakistani artists to work in India, suggesting the central government should make a policy and it should be implemented.
“I believe that the government should decide whether Pakistani artists should be allowed to work in India,” he added.
The first teaser of Abir Gulaal was released on Tuesday, featuring Pakistani actor Fawad Khan and Vaani Kapoor, couple sitting in a car, showcasing Fawad singing Kuch Naa Kaho from the film 1942.
