Netflix plans series on Karachi’s Lyari, claims PPP leader Nabeel Gabol

Senior Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader and former federal minister Nabeel Gabol has claimed that global streaming platform Netflix is planning a major series based on Karachi’s historic Lyari area.

According to Gabol, a Netflix production team contacted him with a proposal for a three-season series aimed at showcasing the real Lyari to the world.

He stated that the proposed series will highlight Lyari’s history and its social and political context, countering the negative portrayal often presented in foreign productions.

Gabol further mentioned that the Netflix team plans to visit Pakistan in March as part of this project.

He added that a Netflix-affiliated director and producer have expressed interest in casting Brazilian actor Wagner Moura, famed for his role as Pablo Escobar in the popular Netflix series Narcos.

The PPP leader emphasised that presenting Lyari solely as a hub of crime is misleading propaganda, pointing out that the area has a unique identity due to its cultural traditions, sports, and political awareness.
