Saba Qamar responds to criticism over remarks about Karachi

Actor Saba Qamar has issued a statement following widespread criticism over her recent comments about Karachi, which she made during a podcast interview.

The controversy began when Qamar was asked whether she would consider permanently moving to Karachi. In response, the actor immediately said “Astaghfirullah,” a remark that drew backlash on social media.

Many Karachi-based users criticised her response, accusing the actor of disrespecting the city where she built a significant part of her career. Some demanded an apology, while others reminded her of the professional opportunities she had received in Karachi’s entertainment industry.

After remaining silent for two days, Qamar addressed the issue through an Instagram story, saying her comment had been taken out of context. “I was busy and only now realised how one of my thoughts or statements has been turned into breaking news,” she wrote.

She clarified that she was merely expressing a personal opinion in response to a question. “I shared my thoughts and perspective when asked. There was no disrespect intended,” she added.

Actor and host Iffat Omar came to Qamar’s defence, questioning the criticism directed at her. “If Karachi is dirty, why should anyone be forced to like it?” she remarked, suggesting that Qamar’s opinion should be seen as an honest response rather than an insult.

Saba Qamar, known for her versatility and realism in acting, is among Pakistan’s most acclaimed performers. Her candid views often attract both praise and controversy from audiences.
