Veteran actor Bushra Ansari called on the Punjab government to conduct a thorough investigation into the alleged rape incident at Punjab College Campus 10, stating that the students are well-educated and would not make false claims of such a serious nature.
The actress took to Instagram to share her concerns regarding the ongoing controversy surrounding the alleged sexual assault of a female student at a private college in Lahore. The government has dismissed the allegations as "false information" and "fake news."
There is so much confusion surrounding the circumstances of the incident, Bushra Ansari said, adding, "I don't know the truth, but the students are well-educated. They are not an ignorant mob that burn people alive on false information."
She argued that if only a handful of students had come forward, their accusations might have been dismissed as fabricated, but “thousands of students cannot lie.”
The government must uncover the “real story and take decisive action,” she urged while expressing her frustration with the recurring rape cases in Pakistan.
The news of the alleged rape went viral on social media, with various accounts claiming that a security guard sexually assaulted a fist year intermediate student in the basement of Punjab College Campus 10 in Lahore’s Gulberg area.
The spread of several videos and explanations linked to the incident has divided the internet, with some calling the unrest the result of fake news about the rape, while others express doubt about the government’s interpretation of the incident.
After an initial investigation, ASP Sheherbano Naqvi recorded a video statement on Monday alongside the alleged victim’s father and uncle, describing the incident as “propaganda” and “misinformation.”
Despite clarifications and assurances about the ongoing investigation into the spread of fake news on social media, students in various cities across Punjab refused to back down and continued their protests against the alleged rape incident.
