Renowned comedian Ali Gul Pir opposed the removal of Barzakh from YouTube, advising critics to avoid watching the drama rather than calling for a ban, which he believes is not a solution.
Ali Gul Pir took a dig at fashion designer Maria B for her campaign to ban "Barzakh" in Pakistan. Despite the announcement by the show's creators that the series will be removed from YouTube Pakistan on August 9, Maria B decided to take legal action against the drama.
“Isn’t this an Indian owned and broadcasted show? Will you go to court against international shows that are offensive too?” he asked Maria B, and suggested she file a lawsuit against “Game of Thrones” because the series portrays incest.
In another post, the rapper explained that the boycott campaign is misguided, and a similar controversy led to a three-year ban on YouTube in Pakistan because of a video that was created in America.
“There is a lot of obscene content on YouTube that people avoid, and they can also choose not to watch this drama,” he said.
“It’s an international project involving Pakistani actors. You can’t ban everything on the internet. Just don’t watch it, don’t watch the drama,” Pir added.
He argued that those who are opposing the drama have ironically made it more popular, as many people, including himself, were unaware of "Barzakh" before the controversy and he has not watched it yet.
Ali Gul Pir maintained that the entire country is obsessed with a drama while there is no public outcry over the country's poor performance at the Olympics or the deteriorating state of hospitals, highlighting the misplaced priorities.
