The prime suspect in the murder of gold medalist engineer Itteqa Moeen escaped police custody during his court appearance in Karachi on Monday.
According to the police, the main accused Zahir was brought to court from jail yesterday. He was last seen leaving the courtroom for the City Court lock-up at 4:10pm.
The police reported that the suspect went missing after entering the lockup. A headcount during the transfer back to jail from court confirmed that all other prisoners were present.
However, upon reaching the prison and conducting a headcount, prison officials discovered that one suspect was missing from the group.
The police registered a case against Constable Ishtiaq Ahmed at the City Court police station for the escape of the suspect.
The 27-year-old Hafiz Quran was killed in Karachi during a robbery in Gulshan-e-Iqbal on June 1.
The news of his murder sparked outrage, prompting opposition parties to demand the government and police apprehend the suspects and hold them accountable.
Officers from the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) apprehended Zahir in Quetta.
The suspects turned out to be trained criminals who had been committing crimes in the metropolis, including stealing cars and motorcycles, which they then sold in Balochistan.
