Rescue teams in Karachi are searching for an 11-year-old boy who is feared to have drowned after being swept away by a strong current while swimming in an open water line in Scheme-33 on Friday.

Officials said that the child, Zahid Mohammed Khan, was carried away at around 2pm while swimming in a line managed by the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC).

Despite hours of efforts, he had not been recovered by late evening. Teams from Rescue 1122 and the Edhi Foundation continued the search, with officials saying the heavy flow of water was making the operation difficult.

Rescue 1122 said its personnel are conducting search operations at two different points.

KWSC officials who inspected the site believe the boy may be carried as far as Gulistan-i-Jauhar Block 1, near Continental Bakery, where an iron grill has been installed. They estimated it could take one to two days for him to reach that point.
