DHA Karachi assault case: What happened to Ali Jaffri?

A case involving the alleged assault and abduction of a young man, Ali Jaffri, in Karachi’s DHA has sparked concern on social media.

Dialogue Pakistan visited the City Court to gather more information about the incident and spoke to journalist Abdullah Jamal regarding the case.

According to Abdullah Jamal, Ali received a call from his friend Hassan on August 29, inviting him for dinner and gaming. Ali went to meet Hassan, who was accompanied by two other young men who were introduced to him. After visiting a restaurant in Bukhari Commercial, the group reportedly left the area, where a car allegedly arrived and Ali was forcibly taken inside.

Abdullah alleged that Ali was taken towards DHA Phase 8, where he was severely assaulted. He claimed Ali was beaten with a baseball bat on different parts of his body, had his hair cut and placed in his mouth, and was allegedly forced to use abusive language against himself.

According to him, the attackers later returned Ali to the location where he had been picked up, believing that he had died. When Ali was questioned, he reportedly denied that anything had happened, saying his father was worried.

Abdullah Jamal said the incident followed a pattern similar to other recent high-profile cases and urged authorities to take action to prevent such incidents from occurring again. Meanwhile, the lawyer representing the accused, Advocate Qurrat-ul-Ain, questioned the authenticity of the viral video, saying it had not yet undergone forensic examination.

She also claimed that the video was circulated by friends and that the dispute stemmed from a disagreement between two young men over a gaming zone. She further questioned the six-day delay in registration of the FIR.

However, the victim’s lawyer, Advocate Talha Baloch, described the incident as a case of attempted murder. He argued that placing a weapon on someone's head and striking them with a baseball bat could not be treated as an ordinary fight.

He also alleged that Ali was stripped of his clothes and that pictures and a video were shared on social media, including a post carrying the words “mission accomplished.”

Police have registered an FIR in connection with the alleged kidnapping. The victim’s side has urged authorities to first assess Ali’s physical and mental condition, record the statements of the accused and take appropriate legal action. The investigation and forensic examination of the viral footage are expected to establish the facts of the case.
