Cabinet gives nod to observe May 9 as 'black day' every year

The federal cabinet convened on Thursday resolved to mark May 9 as an annual "black day."

During the special session, a resolution denouncing the events of May 9 was unanimously adopted. The cabinet also proposed stringent measures to prevent attacks and vandalism on military and national infrastructure, intending to introduce these recommendations as legislation in parliament.

Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar presented a report from the cabinet committee, established during the interim government, tasked with investigating the May 9 riots. The committee suggested legal amendments and severe penalties for damaging government property.

Additionally, the cabinet members emphasized the importance of swift and decisive actions in cases related to the incident, echoing the approach taken in the Gujranwala incident.

Tarar expressed optimism that similar decisive measures would be taken in other instances, aiming to demonstrate that those who defy the law will face swift justice.

However, Political Affairs Advisor Rana Sanaullah criticized the cabinet's report for its lack of clarity in identifying the culprits.

The session concluded with a decision to deliberate on the interim cabinet committee's recommendations in parliament for potential legislation.
