Cambridge International Education (CIE) has confirmed that one of its AS-level mathematics exam papers was leaked ahead of schedule, prompting concern among students and parents.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the examination body said that the AS-Level Mathematics Paper 12 (9709), conducted across regions including Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Pakistan and South Asia, had been “shared prematurely” in violation of its rules.

“We investigate such incidents promptly and thoroughly and we are now working to understand the extent of the leak and determine next steps,” the statement said.

The development follows an announcement by the Inter Board Committee of Chairmen (IBCC), which said it would seek a report from Cambridge after concerns were raised over the transparency of the examination process.

Cambridge said its priority is to ensure that candidates are not negatively affected by the situation, adding that steps would be taken to safeguard the credibility of its assessments.

“It is important that candidates continue to prepare for, and take, the upcoming exam,” the statement added. The organisation said a further update would be issued on May 7.

Cambridge International Education, part of Cambridge University Press and Assessment, conducts exams in more than 160 countries. In Pakistan, its O Level, AS and A Level qualifications are widely taken by students pursuing higher education locally and abroad.
