The Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) has recommended that cleric and social media figure Engineer Muhammad Ali Mirza, who was recently arrested and booked under blasphemy charges, should be proceeded against under the relevant laws.
The matter was referred to the CII for its opinion by the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA).
In a statement, the Council said that its meeting, chaired by CII Chairman Allama Dr. Raghib Naeemi, held a detailed discussion on the allegations levelled against Mirza.

According to the statement, under Shariah principles, the use of certain undersirable words may only be permissible when used in a context where the intent was to warn against wrong-doing. However, it noted, that was not the case here.
The Council, therefore, recommended that the matter be proceeded with under the law.
Last month, the Jhelum police detained Mirza and later registered a case against him. A resident of Machine Mohallah in Jhelum, Mirza regularly posts lectures and talks on social media and has built a following of over 3.1 million subscribers on YouTube.
