Dog bite incidents in Karachi have surged sharply, with health officials describing the situation as alarming after hundreds of cases were reported in the first five days of the year.

According to hospital data, around 850 people were bitten by dogs across the city during this period. The Indus Hospital in Korangi alone reported 300 new dog bite cases in five days, while Civil Hospital and Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre recorded more than 300 cases combined.

In-charge of the Dog Bite Clinic, Dr Aftab Gohar, said most cases were reported from Korangi, Hub Chowki, Baldia, Landhi and Gadap areas.

He also confirmed that a 41-year-old dog bite victim at Indus Hospital had to undergo amputation of a finger after the wound became severely infected.

Dr Gohar warned that rabies remains a serious public health threat, stressing that once symptoms of the disease appear, it is almost always fatal. He urged authorities to strengthen preventive measures and appealed to the public to seek immediate medical treatment after any dog bite.
