The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) summoned Ameer Jamat-e-Islami Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman over ignoring the women's quota in the National Assembly seats.

The development comes at a time when Naeem has been leading the nationwide protest for weeks against inflated electricity bills and government policies to deal with challenges.

Alongside JI, the ECP called 12 other political parties' heads, including the Awami National Party (ANP), Balochistan National Party (BNP), and Tehreek-e-Labaik Pakistan for failing to allocate seats for the women in the lower house.

According to the notice, Hafiz Naeem was asked to appear before the ECP on Thursday morning at 10 O’clock.

The notices were issued under Section 206 of the Election Act, which directed the parties to allocate women's quota

The section termed it mandatory for all political parties to give at least 5 per cent of seats in the national assembly to women.

Earlier, the Commission had also asked for the accounts statements from the political parties of the country.

According to the ECP, political parties must submit details of their annual income, expenditure, funding sources, assets and liabilities by August 29.

It also sought declarations for the sources of funding, as parties have to show the sources of financing, to make it clear that the party did not receive funds from prohibited sources.
