Information Minister Attaullah Tarar has lauded the conviction of former chief of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Faiz Hameed as a “historic decision."

Speaking to a private TV channel, Tarar said that the Field General Court Martial's (FGCM) decision to award sentence to the ex-spymaster reflected the strength and credibility of the Pakistan Army’s internal accountability system.

“The institution’s legal mechanisms are very strong. Evidence was presented over a long period, and witnesses recorded their statements in detail, after which this historical decision was made,” he said.

The minister said that the person who “crossed the red line” has been punished today, adding that after his retirement, when political activity is prohibited for former military officials, he became an adviser to the PTI and “fully supported the party’s political agenda.”

Tarar maintained that Gen Hameed’s involvement in the events of May 9 has been proven. “The housing society case is on record. Misuse of authority and unlawful actions are undeniable. This is a landmark decision that has strengthened the system of law and justice,” he said.

He said that the former spymaster was given a fair trial and ample opportunity to defend himself. “He was allowed to present evidence and witnesses. Investigations into his political activities were also conducted, and all matters have been established,” he added.
