The Cyber Crime Circle of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has apprehended eight individuals implicated in the dissemination of fabricated images of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.
These suspects, associated with a particular political party, were discovered to have altered images of both Maryam Nawaz and the President of the UAE.
During a press conference held in Lahore, Sarfraz Chaudhry, Additional Director of the FIA's Cyber Crime Circle, along with Assistant Director Zawar Hussain, elaborated on the investigation's findings.
They announced the establishment of a joint task force aimed at addressing the issue of those responsible for circulating the manipulated images on social media platforms, including those originating from the United States and other nations.
"We have initiated eight cases related to this issue, and all eight individuals named in these cases have been apprehended," stated Sarfraz Chaudhry. The suspects' mobile devices contained posts from Shahbaz Gill and Imran Riaz Khan, suggesting that they had been sharing content from these political figures.
Chaudhry denounced the actions of the arrested individuals, expressing concern over their lack of respect for social media ethics and for women. He further noted that the FIA had reached out to foreign authorities to acquire server information and would ensure that all involved parties are held accountable.
The joint task force has already showcased three suspects to the media. Chaudhry also indicated that materials sent by Shahbaz Gill were discovered on the suspects' devices, and that Imran Riaz Khan had utilized these individuals to disseminate his content.
"This initiative represents a nationwide effort, with collaborative investigation teams operating across all provinces," Chaudhry added. "The suspects were utilizing fake identities on Facebook to propagate the misleading content."
