US President-elect Donald Trump’s special envoy, Richard Grenell's post went viral on X after he reposted a story by Pakistani news outlet Geo News with the caption, “Free Imran Khan.”
The story, published on December 15, reported Grenell’s appointment as a presidential envoy for special missions.
While Trump did not specify Grenell’s exact responsibilities, he announced on his Truth Social platform that Grenell would operate in some of the world’s most critical regions, including Venezuela and North Korea.
Geo News, however, sparked backlash for its headline: “Gay Richard Grenell appointed as Trump’s special envoy.” The post, which highlighted Grenell’s sexuality, was widely criticised on social media.
Many PTI supporters accused the outlet of bias, alleging that the emphasis on Grenell’s sexuality was an attempt to discredit his support for Imran Khan in the eyes of the public.
As the controversy gained momentum on X, Grenell himself responded by reposting the story and reiterating his stance, “I’ll say it again. Free Imran Khan.”
Following the backlash, Geo News deleted the post and updated the headline.
However, the report continued to note that Grenell has been at the center of multiple controversies, including criticism over his conservative views, his 'open homosexuality,' and his previous tenure as an envoy to Venezuela, which was heavily criticised.
The report also stated that Grenell, being openly gay, faced objections from several Republicans when he was appointed to Trump’s cabinet due to his staunchly conservative positions and controversial remarks about women.
