The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecasted ongoing heatwave conditions across the country throughout the current week, with significantly higher-than-normal daytime temperatures expected in both southern and northern regions.

In its daily weather advisory issued Monday, the PMD noted that a high-pressure system in the upper atmosphere is likely to persist from May 20 to May 24. Under its influence, daytime temperatures in Sindh, southern Punjab, and Balochistan are expected to remain 4 to 6°C above normal.

Meanwhile, central and upper Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir could experience temperatures 5 to 7°C above normal during the same period.

The PMD also warned of possible dust storms and gusty winds in plain areas due to extreme heat.

Authorities have urged the public, especially vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and women, to take precautions, including avoiding direct sunlight and staying hydrated. Farmers have been advised to adjust their crop and livestock management plans in response to the extreme weather conditions.

The PMD also cautioned that rising temperatures may accelerate snowmelt in northern regions, potentially impacting water availability. All concerned departments have been advised to stay alert and implement necessary measures to mitigate any adverse impacts of the heatwave.
