The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast continued heavy rainfall in Karachi, warning of potential urban flooding across the port city as pre-monsoon showers are expected to persist through the weekend.
According to the PMD’s rain advisory, intermittent rains accompanied by thunderstorms are expected to continue until Sunday.
These showers are part of the pre-monsoon season, ahead of the official start of the monsoon spells. The Met Office further stated that the first monsoon spell is likely to begin on July 2, followed by a second spell starting from July 5.
On Thursday night, Karachi witnessed heavy downpours in several areas. The PMD recorded the highest rainfall at Gulshan-e-Hadeed with 17mm, followed by 12mm on Shahrah-e-Faisal, 9mm in the Old City area, 7.8mm in Defence Phase 2, and 2mm along University Road.

The rainfall triggered widespread power outages, as at least 300 K-Electric feeders tripped, plunging multiple neighbourhoods into darkness. Affected areas included Gulshan-e-Iqbal, North Karachi, Nazimabad, Surjani, Gadap, Liaquatabad, PIB Colony, Korangi, Old City Area, Jamshed Road, and Maymar.
The PMD has advised residents to remain cautious, especially in low-lying areas prone to water accumulation. Emergency services have been placed on alert, as the risk of urban flooding remains high with continued rainfall in the coming days.
Authorities urge citizens to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy showers and report any emergencies to local disaster management units.
