Scotland’s former First Minister, Humza Yousaf, stated that the incarceration of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan undermines democratic rule in Pakistan.
Speaking at Oxford University, Yousaf shared that his father expressed pride in him for addressing such a prestigious institution.
In a post on X, Yousaf emphasised the importance of nurturing democracy in Pakistan.
He also remarked on his father’s delight that he was speaking at the same university where "legendary World Cup-winning captain Imran Khan studied and grew into a cricketer."
Yousaf described it as "disheartening" to see Imran Khan behind bars.
“Pakistan is a country that will forever be close to my heart, and while I am not affiliated with any political party,” he said, “the continuous cycle of jailing political opponents every time there is an election fundamentally undermines the democratic principles of that nation.”
The imprisonment of former Prime Minister Imran Khan in Adiala Jail has drawn criticism from several international leaders, including business tycoons.
Khan, who faces multiple charges of corruption and violence, has been incarcerated for over a year since August 2023, when he was arrested for failing to declare the sale of state gifts.
