Heavy rains and flooding in Azad Kashmir caused the Poonch River to overflow, reportedly sweeping away landmines and other explosive devices planted by the Pakistani and Indian armies along the Line of Control (LoC).

The situation has sparked fears for civilian safety in the region.

Images circulating on social media showed explosives spotted by locals in flood debris. Authorities have warned that these devices pose a grave threat to lives and property.

The district administration and relevant departments said they are monitoring the situation closely and have launched precautionary measures.

Residents, particularly children and the elderly, have been strictly advised not to touch any suspicious or explosive objects. Civil Defence teams will handle and defuse such materials. Citizens have been urged to immediately report any findings to local administration offices or rescue services.

Meanwhile, the Azad Kashmir government has declared a four-day closure of schools from August 19 to 23 due to torrential rains and widespread flooding. The Meteorological Department has forecast more heavy showers in the region over the next two days.

According to a report by the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA), at least 13 people have lost their lives and 14 others have been injured in incidents caused by cloudbursts and heavy rains.

The report said 350 houses were damaged, of which 79 were completely destroyed and 271 partially damaged. In addition, 19 shops, 16 bridges, five schools, a mosque, and several community centers were also destroyed or severely affected. Hundreds of livestock were killed, while multiple roads sustained major damage.

The Neelum Valley was among the worst-hit areas, where flash floods washed away several connecting roads.
