In a major relief to the former ruling party, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday suspended Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and his wife Buhsra Bibi's convictions in the Toshakhana case.
Earlier in January, An accountability court sentenced the former prime minister and his spouse to 14 years in prison with rigorous punishment in the Toshakhana reference.
Judge Mohammad Bashir also disqualified Imran Khan and Bushra from holding any public office for 10 years and imposed a fine of Rs1.573 billion on the couple.
Today, a two-member bench, led by Chief Justice IHC Aamer Farooq, heard the petition of the couple, seeking suspension of sentences in the Toshakhana case.
The court fixed the hearing on the appeal against punishment after the Eid-ul-Fitr holidays. The court also ordered to release the couple from jail in the said case.
In the Toshakhana case, Imran Khan was accused of acquiring valuable gifts from foreign countries at a reduced price during his tenure as Prime Minister from 2018 to 2022. Subsequently, he was alleged to have sold these gifts for a total of $635,000.
Among Imran Khan's received items was a watch from Saudi Arabia, featuring a model of the Kaaba valued at Rs85 million ($385,000) in the international market.
