Imran Khan, the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has rejected the remarks made by the Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (DG ISPR), emphasizing that the negotiations with the Taliban were a strategy formulated by former army chief Qamar Javed Bajwa.
This was shared by lawyer Faisal Chaudhry, who spoke to the media outside Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi on Tuesday, following a meeting of a six-member legal team with the former prime minister.
Chaudhry stated, “Imran Khan’s position is unequivocal— the cases against him and other PTI leaders are politically motivated and lack merit. These legal proceedings serve as a tool for political persecution rather than a pursuit of justice.”
He further mentioned that Khan has reiterated his demand for a judicial commission to investigate the events of May 9 and the protests on November 26.
“Our leader is seeking justice, not leniency, and has set a deadline of January 31 to evaluate the government’s commitment to dialogue,” he added.
Regarding the negotiations with the Taliban, Chaudhry relayed Khan’s assertion that “the ISPR’s stance is erroneous. General Bajwa was responsible for the strategy concerning the establishment’s interactions with the Taliban.
The issues in Afghanistan can only be addressed through dialogue, which remains the most viable solution.”
Khan also criticized the simultaneous diplomatic initiatives and military actions, advocating for a coherent strategy. He condemned the trials conducted in military courts, labeling the sentences as contentious.
“These trials lack transparency and do not uphold justice. The constitution must be respected, and human rights safeguarded,” he stated.
The PTI team plans to engage in discussions on January 2 and is dedicated to tackling issues such as electoral mandates and constitutional reforms. “The nation is suffering economically due to political instability and mismanagement,” Chaudhry concluded.
