A recently released ranking of the world's 1,000 top cities by Oxford Economics has placed Karachi at the 918th position, lagging behind other major Pakistani cities.

The Global Cities Index 2024 is a comprehensive ranking that considers 27 areas including economy, human capital, quality of life, environment, and governance.

According to this list, the best city in Pakistan is Islamabad/Rawalpindi, ranked 578th out of 1000 cities.

Lahore followed in second place, ranked 878th overall, while Peshawar secured the third position with 895th rank.

Pakistan's biggest city, Karachi, came in fourth at 918th position and Quetta took the fifth spot with 940th rank.

Globally, New York has emerged as the top city, followed by London, San Jose, Tokyo, Seattle, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Melbourne, and Zurich in the first 10 cities.

The world's 50 best cities are predominantly dominated by America and Europe, with Tokyo, Seoul (41st), and Singapore (42nd) being the exceptions in Asia.

The ranking highlights the strengths and weaknesses of major cities worldwide, providing valuable insights for policymakers, businesses, and individuals, according to Oxford Economics.

The index provides a comprehensive framework for understanding the competitive position of cities in a rapidly changing global economy.
