National Assembly passes SC (Practice and Procedure) Act 2025

Islamabad: The National Assembly has approved the Supreme Court (Practice and Procedure) Act 2025.

Under the new law, the authority to constitute benches for hearing cases has been assigned to a three-member committee headed by the Chief Justice of Pakistan.

The committee will include the Chief Justice and the two senior-most judges of the Supreme Court, while the third member may be a judge nominated by the Chief Justice.

According to the Act, in the absence of any committee member, the Chief Justice will have the power to nominate another judge in their place.

Decisions of the committee regarding bench formation will be made by majority vote.

The Supreme Court (Practice and Procedure) Amendment Bill was presented in the National Assembly by Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar and was passed by a majority vote.
