Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi has announced that surveillance cameras will be installed on trains as part of wider safety and modernisation measures being undertaken by Pakistan Railways.

Speaking while outlining the organisation’s performance for 2025, Abbasi said Pakistan Railways generated more than Rs93 billion in revenue during the year.

He added that income of Rs50 billion is expected in the first half of the 2025–26 fiscal year, while total annual earnings are projected to cross Rs1 trillion for the first time in the organisation’s history.

The minister said the railways’ safety department has been upgraded to a full directorate, resulting in a significant reduction in accidents.

According to him, the accident rate has fallen from 0.09 per cent to 0.04 per cent, and no major incidents have been reported since the directorate was established.

Abbasi said Rawalpindi has been developed as the country’s first smart railway station, equipped with cameras and a modern security system, while other major stations are set to be upgraded in 2026. He confirmed that cameras will also be installed on trains.

He added that eight train rakes have been upgraded in the past eight months and said all trains would be refurbished by December 2026. Major stations in Lahore, Karachi, Rawalpindi and Faisalabad have also been upgraded, with digital ticketing, ATMs, vending machines and POS facilities introduced.
