Pakistan has been ranked the world’s fifth most affordable country for public transport, according to a 2025 report by an Australian research organisation that analysed fares in 123 countries and 319 cities.

The study found that the average cost of a one-way bus or metro ticket in Pakistan is Rs46, while a monthly travel pass costs about Rs1,800. In contrast, Iceland topped the list as the most expensive country, with a single ticket averaging Rs1,365 and a monthly pass priced at Rs22,660.

Other high-cost nations included Switzerland, the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, and Norway, while Luxembourg ranked as the cheapest, offering free public transport. Nicaragua, Sri Lanka, and Syria were also among the most affordable countries.

Analysts said Pakistan’s low fares make public transport accessible for ordinary commuters, while high costs in European nations continue to burden households despite advanced transport systems.
