Peshawar police have arrested a constable who confessed to aiding a deadly suicide attack that killed 86 officers in a central mosque within the Police Lines area, in exchange for a Rs200,000 bribe.
Inspector General (IG) of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Akhtar Hayat Gandapur, announced the arrest of the accused, identified as Mohammad Wali, and shared his video confession with the media on Tuesday.
The attack occurred in January 2023 when a suicide bomber exploded himself inside the mosque during Zuhr prayers, causing the roof to collapse on worshippers.
The attacker, positioned in the first row, triggered the explosion, resulting in huge number of casualties, including the mosque’s imam.
The banned group Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the attack.
IG Gandapur added that Wali was apprehended near Jamil Chowk a few days ago, and two suicide jackets were recovered from him. The investigation revealed that Wali was serving with the KP police department.
