In light of safety concerns, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has advised its pilots and cabin crew to refrain from fasting during Ramadan to 'minimize risks' during flight operations.
A manager of the PIA flight safety department sent out a document explaining the rules about fasting for all cabin crew members while traveling.
"Fasting can possibly hinder ability to focus, quick decision-making, and may lead to dehydration or hypoglycemia. These factors could create problems during critical situations," according to corporate safety management and the aircrew medical center's advice.
While acknowledging the importance of fasting within Islam, the circular outlined guidelines specifically for travel and flight operations.
It underscored the gravity of potential mishaps, which could jeopardise the safety of both crew members and passengers, especially if responses are delayed or compromised due to the effects of fasting.
The directive explicitly stated that all cockpit and cabin crew members observing fasting must refrain from participating in flight operations.
It emphasised the necessity of adhering to regulations, highlighting that "exemptions based on personal choice would not be permitted, even under state law".
The priority was to ensure the safety of passengers and crew by strictly adhering to rules and regulations, the national airline said.
