Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Wednesday declared an environmental and agricultural emergency in Pakistan, urging the federal and provincial governments to formulate a comprehensive policy to address the growing challenges posed by climate change and natural disasters.
Addressing the federal cabinet, the Prime Minister expressed deep concern over the ongoing flood devastation, particularly in Punjab, Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and now Sindh. He assured that relief operations are underway and prayed that no further damage occurs in the flood-hit regions.
Shahbaz Sharif said the government has taken responsibility for assessing agricultural losses and announced that detailed damage reports for key crops including rice, sugarcane, and cotton will be presented next week.
Following consultations, the cabinet also approved the formation of a dedicated committee under the leadership of Ahsan Iqbal, including relevant ministers and secretaries, to coordinate actions and mitigation strategies.
The Prime Minister emphasized that both the federal and provincial governments must contribute their share to restore the country’s agricultural and environmental stability.
While focusing on domestic challenges, Shahbaz Sharif also condemned Israel’s recent attack on Qatari territory, calling it “extreme cruelty that is beyond condemnation.”
The Prime Minister further paid tribute to Pakistan’s armed forces, highlighting the sacrifices of Major Adnan Aslam, who was martyred fighting terrorists in Bannu.
Shahbaz Sharif attended the funeral at GHQ alongside Army Chief Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, noting the pride and courage expressed by the martyr’s family. He urged the nation to reject poisonous propaganda on social media that mocks the sacrifices of martyrs and institutions.
Shahbaz Sharif also shared highlights from his recent visit to China, describing the business conference he attended as exceptional and thanking ministers, secretaries, and officers for their efforts.
He stressed the importance of strengthening Pakistan’s strategic partnership with China and establishing good relations with the United States, noting that agreements have been signed with American companies in the mineral sector.
