Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders have strongly condemned the conviction of their founder, Imran Khan, in the Al-Qadir Trust case, calling the decision politically motivated and vowing to challenge the ruling in the High Court.
Speaking to the media outside the National Assembly, Omar Ayub described the day of the verdict as a "dark day" in Pakistan’s judicial history, as Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, were sentenced to 14 years and seven years in prison, respectively, with fines of Rs1 million for Imran Khan and Rs500,000 for Bushra Bibi.
He questioned the alleged false connection between the funds involved and the PTI leadership, emphasizing that the Supreme Court, not Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi, received the money.
Shibli Faraz further claimed that neither Imran Khan nor Bushra Bibi benefited from the transactions and are being punished solely for establishing the Al-Qadir Trust University, which aims to promote the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
“Those who looted the country walk free, while sincere leaders are sent to jail,” said Shibli Faraz, reaffirming the party’s commitment to challenging the verdict and pursuing justice.
Imran Khan’s legal team has prepared the petition to challenge the verdict, which will be submitted to the High Court after the power of attorney is attested.
Imran Khan, the founder of PTI, was sentenced to 14 years in prison in the £190 million case by the Accountability Court on Friday.
Accountability Court Judge Nasir Javed Rana announced the verdict, sentencing Bushra Bibi to seven years in prison and imposing a fine of Rs500,000 on her, while Imran Khan faces a fine of Rs1 million.
