The Punjab government has enforced a province-wide ban on smoking in public spaces under the Prohibition of Smoking Ordinance 2002, with violators facing fines of up to Rs100,000.

According to private news, the ban applies to educational institutions, hospitals, government offices, shopping malls, and public transport. Fines will range from Rs1,000 to Rs100,000, depending on the severity of the offence.

A meeting chaired by Additional Commissioner Coordination Syed Nazrat Ali was held to discuss implementation strategies.

Officials from relevant departments were briefed on enforcement procedures.

“Cigarette retailers are now required to display warning notices at their outlets,” said Syed Nazrat Ali. He further stated that selling cigarettes within 50 metres of any educational institution is strictly prohibited, with penalties between Rs5,000 and Rs100,000 for violations.

Designated officers have been authorised to impose fines, seal shops, and confiscate tobacco products in case of non-compliance.

The government has also directed all public sector bodies — particularly schools — to appoint focal persons and trainers for tobacco control.

“Our top priority is to protect students from the harmful effects of tobacco,” Nazrat Ali added, noting that smoking is a major contributor to throat cancer, heart disease, and lung conditions, resulting in over 160,000 deaths annually in Pakistan.
