The Punjab government is considering a proposal to reduce the duration of summer and winter vacations in educational institutions, marking a potential shift in the province’s academic calendar.

Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat, in an interview with Samaa, said that the government is reviewing plans to shorten school holidays as part of broader education reforms. According to the minister, summer vacations could be reduced by 15 to 20 days, while winter breaks may be shortened by five to six days.

He added that the proposal is currently under consideration and no final decision has yet been made.

Rana Sikandar Hayat further revealed that authorities are also exploring the option of keeping schools open on alternate weeks to ensure continuity in the academic process. The move, he said, is aimed at improving learning outcomes and better utilising the academic year.

In addition, the minister noted that separate academic calendars are being planned for matriculation and O/A Level students. The proposed change is intended to align examination schedules more effectively and reduce disruptions caused by extended holidays.

The development comes as education authorities in Punjab continue to assess ways to address learning gaps and enhance academic performance across schools.
