Raja Pervez Ashraf strongly denied allegations linking him to alleged drug suspect Anmol alias Pinky, saying he had lived a “spotless life” in public service.
The controversy emerged after a video from the suspect’s court appearance went viral on social media, in which she could allegedly be heard mentioning “Raja Pervez” before police officials drowned out the audio. A separate clip later surfaced in which her lawyer claimed she was being pressured to name certain politicians.
Addressing the National Assembly, Ashraf said he was shocked upon hearing his name and initially believed it referred to someone else. He thanked his family, party colleagues, and even political opponents for publicly defending his reputation.
He said "I was the minister and I was the speaker of the National Assembly. I am happy to be investigated." He also said that people should not judge him on media before they know all the facts.
The Law Minister, Azam Nazeer Tarar agreed with Raja Pervez Ashraf. Said the allegation is not serious. He said the government will look into the matter. He also said that the media is giving too much coverage to suspect Pinky and the government will talk to the Information Ministry and PEMRA about this.
National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq said the spread of drugs was a serious concern for society and called for stricter legislation to curb narcotics, particularly in educational institutions.
The case has sparked widespread debate on social media, with calls from lawmakers for legal safeguards against unverified accusations during ongoing investigations.
