Karachi: A meeting of the Sindh Transport Department was held under the chairmanship of Sindh's Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon.

The meeting reviewed the progress on establishing Motor Vehicle Inspection Centers and assessed the performance of those already operating in Karachi.

Sharjeel Memon stated that providing reliable transport facilities to the people of Karachi remains a top priority for the Sindh government.

He said the launch of the Electric Vehicle (EV) Taxi Service will improve the city's taxi system and help reduce environmental pollution.

“All taxi services will be organized under a unified platform, ensuring safe, standard, and legally compliant transport options for passengers,” Memon added.

“This unified system will also improve fare regulation and vehicle inspection procedures.”

The meeting also explored different models for providing EV taxi vehicles to the public through easy installment plans.

Sharjeel Memon said the Sindh government is taking concrete steps to empower women. In the first phase, 1,000 pink scooters will be distributed free of cost to working women and female students.

Efforts are underway to ensure rapid delivery of these scooters to ease transportation challenges for women, he added.

Memon also expressed the desire to relocate traditional buses currently operating in Karachi to other districts and fully transition the city’s bus network to electric vehicles (EVs).

Double-decker buses for Karachi are expected to arrive by June this year, with a larger batch anticipated by late June or early July.

Construction of EV vehicle charging points is progressing rapidly in the city, along with work on parking and other essential facilities.

He added that the upcoming fiscal year’s budget will aim to allocate more funds for the procurement of new buses.
