The Sindh government has decided to lower heavy traffic fines for motorcyclists in Karachi, following discussions in a special committee of the Sindh Assembly on the e-challan system. The committee meeting was convened at the request of Opposition Leader Ali Khursheedi and chaired by Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar.
According to sources, the government will also reduce fines for vehicles with engine capacities up to 1,000cc. Speaking at the meeting, Khursheedi said the opposition had taken practical measures to address the issue rather than simply raising slogans. “We are not against e-challans, but we aim to reduce excessively heavy fines,” he stated.
Home Minister Lanjar highlighted the government’s limited resources for extensive infrastructure improvements, emphasizing the need to balance enforcement with available funding.
Earlier, addressing the provincial assembly’s interior committee, Khursheedi stressed that increasing fines alone would not resolve Karachi’s traffic issues. He called for functional traffic signals, clear lane markings, and improved infrastructure, noting that most roads lacked proper markings and many traffic signals were non-functional.
