Karachi Police Chief Javed Alam Odho claimed to have taken effective policing measures that led to a decrease in street crime in the port city by 50 percent.
Acknowledging the numbers that around hundred lost their lives for resisting robbery, he claimed that a 50 percent drop was noted in the cases of robbery, theft, and other incidents in the first quarter of 2024.
“The police have a special focus on eradication of street crime,” said Odho, expressing the need for a “modern command and crime control centre to tackle the outlaws".
Under the Safe City project, cameras were installed in the metropolis and 25 percent of the work regarding the project was completed.
At least 50 poles and 35 cameras were installed in the seven locations, so far.
However, Odho also claimed that the police had arrested a major criminal gang from the Site Super Highway. The bandits were found involved in the major incidents of robbery in Karachi.
On the other hand, monthly statistics issued by the Citizens-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) showed over 50,000 incidents of street crime between January and August this year.
Moreover, some 100 people were killed and 500 were injured in robbery-resistance incidents in the megapolis, according to a CPLC report.
