The Punjab cabinet has approved a ban on the religious party Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), provincial Information Minister Azma Bukhari announced on Friday.

Speaking at a press conference in Lahore, Bukhari said that while the international community appreciates Pakistan’s role in advocating for a Gaza ceasefire, one political group chose to stage protests under the same pretext.

She explained that the TLP announced demonstrations after the Gaza ceasefire agreement had already been reached.

“During these protests, public and private properties were damaged. Those involved in violent acts cannot claim to be well-wishers of the country or its people,” she remarked. “Did burning police vehicles solve the Gaza issue? The state has decided that such violent protests cannot be tolerated.”

Bukhari emphasised that no one has the right to violate the law or disrupt citizens’ fundamental rights. She thanked traders, transporters, and the general public for rejecting the party’s strike call.

The minister confirmed that the Punjab cabinet has formally approved the ban on TLP and that a summary has been sent to the federal government for final approval.
