The Punjab government announced on Friday that summer vacations for all schools in the province will start on June 1 and end on August 14.
This directive was issued through a formal notification, specifying that all government schools would be closed during this period. Classes will resume on August 15.
In response to the soaring temperatures, the provincial government has also revised school timings. From May 18 to May 31, schools will operate from 7:00 AM to 11:30 AM, allowing students and staff to avoid the peak heat of the day.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), a significant heatwave is expected to affect most regions of Pakistan, particularly Punjab and Sindh, next week.
This is due to a high-pressure system in the upper atmosphere. The PMD advisory, released on Thursday, warns that the intense heat will begin on May 21 and could escalate into a severe heatwave from May 23 to May 27.
Local authorities and schools are advised to prepare for the impending heatwave by ensuring adequate hydration, minimizing outdoor activities during peak hours, and implementing emergency measures if necessary. Public awareness campaigns may also be necessary to educate communities on coping strategies during these severe weather conditions.
