Pakistan is expected to be hit by three heatwaves over the next 25 days, with temperatures reaching up to 45 degree Celsius, according to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

The NDMA warned that several cities in southern Pakistan are at risk of extreme heat, including Bahawalpur and Rahim Yar Khan in Punjab, and Umarkot, Tharparkar, Tando Allahyar, Matiari, and Sanghar in Sindh.

The first wave started today and will last until May 30. While temperatures might rise above 40°C.

The second wave is expected in late May or early June, bringing scorching heat with mercury reaching 45°C and lasting for four to five days.

The third wave is anticipated for the first 10 days of June, affecting cities in Sindh province, including Tharparkar, Umarkot, Sanghar, Badin, and Khairpur.

Karachi sweltered under a scorching sun today, with temperatures reaching 37°C and feel-like temperature fluctuating between 40° to 45°C.

The World Weather Attribution group reported record-breaking temperatures across Asia in April, forcing school closures, damaging crops, and causing health issues.

"Heatwaves have always happened. But the additional heat, driven by emissions from oil, gas and coal, is resulting in death for many people," it said.

The heatwave is followed by torrential rains wreaking havoc in KP and Balochistan.

Heatwaves pose a serious health risk, particularly for children, the elderly, people with disabilities, and people with chronic illnesses.

The scorching heat can overwhelm the body's ability to cool itself, leading to heatstroke, cramps, and worsening of existing health conditions.
