Google has announced a change in the designation of the Gulf of Mexico to "Gulf of America" for users accessing its Maps platform within the United States, in accordance with an executive order issued by President Donald Trump.
In a blog post, the technology company indicated that users located outside the United States would continue to see both the original and the newly adopted name for the Gulf of Mexico, similar to the treatment of other contested geographical locations.
"Users of Maps in the U.S. will observe 'Gulf of America,' while individuals in Mexico will see 'Gulf of Mexico.' Users in other regions will have access to both names," Google stated.
The company explained that this modification is consistent with its policy of adhering to official U.S. government geographic designations as outlined in the Geographic Names Information System.

Upon his inauguration, Trump enacted executive orders that not only altered the name of the Gulf of Mexico but also restored the name of Denali, the highest peak in the United States, to its historical designation of Mt. McKinley.
In 2015, former President Barack Obama officially acknowledged the Alaskan mountain as Denali, a name that has been utilized by Alaska Natives for centuries.
