Pakistan’s first hyperspectral satellite (HS-1) has been successfully launched into space from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre (JSLC) in China, marking a major step forward in the country’s space technology programme.

Footage of the mission was broadcast at the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) headquarters in Karachi.

A Suparco spokesperson described the launch as “a significant milestone in Pakistan’s National Space Policy and Vision 2047,” adding that HS-1 will pave the way for advancements in infrastructure mapping and urban planning. The satellite is also expected to revolutionise agricultural planning and environmental monitoring, the spokesperson said.

According to SUPARCO, HS-1 will play a vital role in predicting floods, landslides, and other natural disasters, while also assisting in real-time monitoring of environmental changes and geological risks.

The satellite is expected to enter its designated orbit later today. Its in-orbit testing phase will take around two months, after which it will become fully operational.

This marks Pakistan’s third satellite launch this year, following the successful deployment of EO-1 and KS-1, both of which remain fully functional in orbit.

SUPARCO said Pakistan’s space programme is now entering “a new era of advanced technology and applications,” underscoring the country’s growing focus on scientific innovation and space research.
