Apple’s upcoming iPhone 18 Pro may introduce satellite-enabled 5G connectivity, according to recent reports citing industry sources and a well-known technology leaker.
Chinese tipster Fixed Focus Digital, quoted by Apple-focused publication Apple Insider, claimed that Apple’s next-generation A20 chipset will include a second-generation in-house C2 modem capable of supporting NR-NTN (New Radio Non-Terrestrial Networks). The technology would allow users to access internet services through satellite networks, expanding functionality beyond the company’s current Emergency SOS via satellite feature.
At present, Apple devices offer limited satellite connectivity, enabling users to send emergency text messages when outside traditional cellular coverage areas. The rumoured upgrade could potentially provide broader internet access in remote locations without reliance on nearby cell towers.
Previous reports by The Information and Bloomberg have also suggested that Apple is exploring expanded satellite communication capabilities for future iPhone models.
For full satellite-based 5G connectivity, Apple would likely need to partner with a satellite service provider. Industry speculation has pointed to Starlink, operated by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, although no official agreement has been confirmed.
In addition to connectivity improvements, the C2 modem is expected to enhance power efficiency and may further integrate Apple’s privacy-focused features, including the ‘limit precise location’ option introduced in earlier models.
