WhatsApp developing AI-powered photo expansion tool for Android

WhatsApp is developing an AI-powered photo expansion feature for Android that could allow users to extend images to a 9:16 aspect ratio for chats and Status updates.

According to WABetaInfo, the feature was spotted in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.33.2 and is being integrated into the app’s drawing editor.

The AI expansion tool is expected to appear alongside existing options such as Animate and Background. Users would be able to access it by opening an image in the editor and scrolling through the available filters.

Powered by Meta AI, the feature would analyse an image and generate additional content around its edges to fit the 9:16 format. Users could also apply the tool again if they are not satisfied with the initial result.

WABetaInfo reported that WhatsApp is preparing the feature for both chats and Status updates, although the two versions may not be released simultaneously. The Status version could be introduced first.

The feature is expected to become available to beta testers through a future WhatsApp update.
